How Long Do Bees Live? The Old Answer Has Changed

It depends on the job and the season. A summer honey bee worker lives 15 to 38 days. A winter worker from the same colony lives 150 to 200 days. A drone lives 21 to 32 days in spring and summer and dies within seconds if he succeeds in mating. A queen has the biological potential for two to five years, but most managed queens in the United States are replaced within one to two years, and in some commercial operations more than half are replaced inside six months. Every caste spends three days as an egg and reaches adulthood in 16 days (queen), 21 days (worker), or 24 days (drone). One figure behind those ranges has moved: in caged laboratory cohorts, median US worker lifespan fell from 34.3 days in the 1970s to 17.7 days in 2019.

Why the six-week answer is no longer the whole answer

The numbers most extension services print come from Mark Winston's The Biology of the Honey Bee (1987), which consolidated cohort studies going back to Free and Spencer-Booth (1959) and Fukuda and Sekiguchi (1966): 15 to 38 days in summer, 30 to 60 in spring and fall, 150 to 200 in winter. Nothing has invalidated them.

What changed is a second measurement running alongside. In 2022, Anthony Nearman and Dennis vanEngelsdorp at the University of Maryland published a Scientific Reports paper on caged worker bees. They were testing whether plain water extended life. It did. They also found something they were not looking for: their bees died at roughly twice the rate of bees in equivalent cage studies from the 1970s, median lifespan across the historical record having fallen from 34.3 days to 17.7. Because the bees were collected as pupae, whatever caused it happened inside the colony, before emergence.

Fed into BEEHAVE, an established population model, that halving produced an operation-level loss rate near 33%, between the 30% overwinter and 40% annual losses beekeepers had reported for fourteen years.

Then came 2025. A Project Apis m. survey of 842 beekeepers, covering roughly 72% of US colonies, found commercial operations lost 62% of their colonies between June 2024 and March 2025. Hobbyists reported about 51%. Some 1.7 million colonies died, and USDA put the impact near $600 million. USDA-ARS screening tied the collapse to high loads of Deformed wing virus A and B and acute bee paralysis virus, plus amitraz-resistance genes in nearly every mite sample.

The tidy version of that last item is wrong: the peer-reviewed analysis of those triage surveys found losses did not differ significantly between amitraz users and non-users.

I came to bees from a ride-dispatch console, where the number on the board was queue length and the number that mattered was the dispatch interval. Lifespan is queue length. The interval decides whether a colony lives.

How long does it take a bee to go from egg to adult?

Twenty-one days for a worker, from the egg being laid to her chewing out of the cell. The egg stage is three days for all castes. After that, diet and cell size split them apart: a queen larva is fed royal jelly continuously and is capped around day five and a half, emerging on day 16. Worker and drone larvae get royal jelly for a few days, then switch to bee bread, which slows them down.

The brood nest holds 33 to 36 °C throughout. A drone needs a further 10 to 12 days after emerging before he is sexually mature.

Read that table as lead time. A queen lost today means no replacement laying well for close to a month, once you add mating flights and the week or two before she hits her stride. A worker cohort you order today, by giving the queen space, arrives in three weeks. Nothing in the yard shortens those intervals, which is why the dwindling colony you find in August was decided in July.

How long does a summer worker bee live?

A summer worker lives 15 to 38 days. The popular figure of five to six weeks overlaps that range at the top and skews long, because it descends from casual estimates rather than marked-cohort counts.

The mechanism is contested, and the disagreement is more useful than either side. Neukirch's 1982 work in the Journal of Comparative Physiology found that a worker's total flight performance appears fixed: bees pushed to high daily output had shorter total flight durations, and old foragers lost the ability to rebuild glycogen in their flight muscles. That is a duty-cycle model. The bee runs down an odometer rather than a calendar, and a heavy nectar flow spends her faster.

The strongest argument against that is Schmid-Hempel and Wolf (1988), who manipulated foraging opportunity directly and found worker lifespans held roughly fixed regardless of time spent outside the hive. I have to grant it, and it is not a small concession, because it undercuts the frame I find most natural. If her clock runs whether she flies or not, the odometer story is decoration.

What survives the disagreement is the part a backyard keeper can use. Flight hours alone cannot explain a range from 15 days to 200 within one species and one colony. The winter bee is physiologically different before winter arrives. Whatever workload does at the margin, the cohort's condition at emergence is the larger lever.

How long does a winter worker bee live?

A winter worker lives 150 to 200 days, with individual bees documented past 250. These are diutinus bees, from the Latin for long-lasting, and not simply summer bees that stayed home.

Döke, Frazier and Grozinger's 2015 review in Current Opinion in Insect Science lays out the profile: enlarged fat bodies, high vitellogenin, low juvenile hormone, and hypopharyngeal glands that stay developed. Vitellogenin and juvenile hormone sit in a negative feedback loop; the winter phenotype holds the vitellogenin end. There is a social trigger too. When an older worker stops sensing young nurse bees behind her, she keeps her fat body rather than shifting to forager physiology and burning out.

They are not senile either. Bees marked at emergence in autumn and tested the following spring, at 160 to 180 days old, still formed associative memories and discriminated between odors.

Here is what I cannot personally vouch for. My hives are in the mid-Atlantic, and I have never overwintered a colony in the northern tier or on the Gulf Coast. The literature is explicit that winter worker longevity in southern climates runs well below the northern figures, because brood rearing never fully stops and the colony keeps spending bees. In Georgia or south Texas, treat 150 to 200 days as somebody else's number. What I can vouch for is the timing signal: in my yard, a bee still alive at six weeks in November is a winter bee.

How long does a queen bee live, and when should you replace her?

A queen's biological ceiling is two to five years. One to two years is what managed queens actually get. In some commercial operations, more than half are replaced within six months, a figure Jeffery Pettis and colleagues reported in PLOS ONE in 2016 against a historical baseline of two to three years.

That paper also gives the clearest mechanism anyone has offered. A queen mates once, early, and stores every sperm she will ever use. Pettis's team measured sperm viability at 92% in queens from colonies beekeepers rated healthy, 57% in queens replaced as routine management, and 54% and 55% in queens rated as failing. Commercial beekeepers responding to Bee Informed Partnership loss surveys have ranked queen failure first or second among causes for years.

I used to requeen on the calendar, every colony, every spring, no argument. I stopped in 2023, and the reason was a 2019 paper in Insects by Katie Lee, Marla Spivak and colleagues at Minnesota and NC State. They paired colonies with good and poor brood patterns, found no queen-quality measure that reliably tracked the poor ones, then swapped the queens. Queens from poor-pattern colonies significantly improved after 21 days in a good colony. The pattern was reporting on the colony, not the queen.

That is the maintenance-hold problem in a different uniform: you replace the visible component and leave the fault in place.

So the procedure I use now:

  1. Record the queen's install date and mark her, so her age is a fact rather than a guess.
  2. Before reading a poor brood pattern as a verdict, check mite load, brood disease and stores. UMass Extension's summary of the Lee paper notes the pattern tracked pesticide levels and brood disease, not queen size or sperm count.
  3. Re-read the pattern after 21 days. Replace her only if it has not improved once the colony's other problems are addressed.

How long do drones live?

A drone lives 21 to 32 days through spring and midsummer, per Winston, with individuals recorded at 43 days. Stanley Schneider's chapter in The Hive and the Honey Bee gives three to five weeks. Drones have no sting, cannot feed themselves efficiently, and exist for one function.

Mating ends them immediately. The endophallus ruptures during copulation and the drone dies in flight. The longer-lived drones in any dataset are the ones that failed, which makes the average a strange statistic: it measures reproductive success as much as physiology.

The season ends them too. As day length drops, workers bite at drone wings and legs, drag them to the entrance and push them out, where they starve or freeze.

In my second September as a beekeeper I found a pile of drones being hauled out of my strongest hive and read it as collapse. I broke that colony down, combined it, and fed it heavily. Nothing had been wrong with it. I had disrupted a healthy colony six weeks before it needed to form its winter cluster; it went into December with a wrecked brood nest and finished dying in February. Autumn drone eviction is one of the few things in a hive that means exactly what it looks like.

Honey bee workers versus bumblebee workers

Search results blend the two, and the summer numbers are close enough to make that look reasonable. A bumblebee worker lives about two to six weeks; a honey bee summer worker lives 15 to 38 days. Averaging them produces a wrong answer, because the colonies run on different time horizons.

A honey bee colony is perennial and solves winter by manufacturing a specialized long-lived cohort in autumn. A bumblebee colony is annual and solves winter by not existing. The Bumblebee Conservation Trust and the University of Wisconsin-Madison bumble bee program describe the same endpoint: males and new queens mate in late season, the founding queen and all workers die, and only mated queens survive, in soil, in diapause for four to ten months. No bumblebee worker is built to last a winter, so there is no bumblebee figure to set against 150 to 200 days.
